Description

The museum is excited to continue The Pop-up Exhibit. This mini 1-2 week-long exhibit will happen twice a year in the museum. Student Curators pair with student organizations to tell their stories. This project gives voice to groups and communities on campus who are making a difference. Examples include: The museum partnered with the Delta Sigma Theta sorority to tell the powerful story of this black sorority’s return to campus. The museum has also worked with Safe Place to recognize the necessity for creating a new culture of consent and healthy relationships. The Education opportunity Program (EOP) celebrated their 50th anniversary with a Pop-Up museum exhibit. The 2024 Book in Common, How the Word Is Passed, with the curation and input from undergrads and graduate students, is being turned into a  pop-up exhibition which will be shown at a few locations across the campus, including Laxson auditorium on April 11, when the author speaks.  Communicating complex ideas and themes of many disciplines and orgs brings about brief but spectacular shows that are engaging and connecting with diverse communities in our midst. Please support these efforts that embody the Learning by Doing motto.

Support the VLSMA pop-up program!

Since its inception in 1970, the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology (VLSMA), under the Department of Anthropology, has served as a multifaceted educational facility and a leading model in the United States as a “teaching museum” and in outreach programming. The Museum of Anthropology advances inclusion, diversity, and service through its commitment to civic engagement, access and equity, High-Impact practices for student training, and multicultural education programming that supports undergraduate and graduate students, and our service region (eleven counties) of the North State. Chico State students received training in curation, collection management, museum education, administration, and event coordination through the Museum Studies Program. In addition, the Museum of Anthropology has launched a new vision to advance three integrated pillars of Decolonization, Inclusion, and Sustainability into its educational training.

Pop-Up Exhibits create spaces and opportunities for discussions on social injustice, identifying and dismantling racist systems and structures, giving voice to underserved communities and student organizations, and creating inclusive and equitable learning environments.

Why are donations necessary?

Campus and student organizations who partner with the museum will benefit from this campaign by having their stories showcased in the museum. Undergraduate and graduate students at the museum will directly experience real-world collaboration and curation training.
