Description

The 2024 National Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) Conference will be held in Oakland, CA on April 4-8, 2024. Please help us send 4 students and 4 faculty/staff to the conference and foster the next generation of Asian/Pacific Islander (API) leaders!

The APAHE Conference is a local, in-state, professional development opportunity that was established to, among its numerous missions, enhance the educational opportunities of Asian and Pacific American students in higher education. This 2-day conference allows students the opportunity to be in a space where they are no longer the minority. They will listen to keynote speakers who look like them, who reference topics they can relate to (rice, the elders, the importance of taking off one’s shoe in the home), and feel connected in a manner that may not be prevalent on campus. Students will attend workshops and gain insight into understanding the “Model Minority Myth”, breaking the glass ceiling, and overcoming fears that may impede their successes. The theme this year is Radical Hope: Leading with Love, Courage, and Action.

How will donations be used?

This year, we have a target amount for this campaign of $6000. This will cover registration, travel, lodging and meals for attendees not provided by the conference. Any remaining amount will be used for future API-related conferences.

  • $75 donation provides dinner for an attendee.
  • $200 covers cost of car rental from Chico to Oakland.
  • $500 covers conference registration for a student.
  • $600 covers lodging for 2 people.

Support APIC Initiatives!

Future initiatives of APIC are aimed at increasing support and resources for the API community at Chico State. These future efforts include developing student mentorship opportunities with API staff and faculty, networking and collaborating with API faculty, and partnering with other affinity groups to build community and allyship across campus. In Fall 2023, the University Diversity Council (UDC) officially announced collaboration with APIC as a pivotal role in preparing Chico State to work towards qualifying for AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander) eligibility. Furthermore, APIC is collaborating closely with CSU Chico Associate Vice President of Student Affairs to support the planned Fall opening of the API Student Retention Center. The purpose of the center is aimed at enhancing API student resources on campus and to make the API community more legible for AANAPISIS status with a dedicated support space .

Why are donations necessary?

Your donation will give API students the opportunity to experience an intentional conference geared at teaching API students the importance of shattering the “Model Minority Myth”, shattering glass ceilings, and shattering the fears standing in the way of their own successes. Prior attendees returned to campus to share what they have learned and became presidents of student organizations, paraprofessional leaders on campus, and some have progressed into graduate school. Thus, join us in empowering our API students towards academic success and lifelong leadership roles!
