Description
The CSU Chico Formula SAE club is one of the best resources on campus for aspiring engineers to gain exposure and experience in working in the field as professional engineers. The Society of Automotive Engineers holds a collegiate competition every year in which teams from around the globe must create a student-run engineering business that is dedicated to a specific application of designing, building, validating, and completing a Formula race car. This gives the club's members a plethora of opportunities to learn the real-world application of what is being taught in engineering classes.
How will donations be used?
This season, donations will be used to help with the costs associated with getting to the competition. In just over two months, the Formula SAE club will be taking its newly constructed car, tools, and supplies out to Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan for competition. Last season, travel expenses such as vehicle rental, fuel, and lodging cost the team over $10,000. Other purchases that will be made with the funds raised will include materials for vehicle component construction, such as billet aluminum and other raw materials for manufacturing, vehicle parts that cannot reasonably be constructed in-house, and tools to allow us to bring the designs to fruition.

The Formula SAE club provides its members opportunities not only to apply the theory they learn in the classroom to a real-world hands-on project, but also, to gain invaluable connections in the industry, helping the club's members as they enter ever-expanding field of engineering. SAE is widely known and its members are sought after in the manufacturing and engineering industries. Every year the club is tasked with designing an entire vehicle, testing and validating the designs, building the vehicle from the ground up in-house, and finally, taking it across the country to compete against teams from around the world. At the competition, several industry executives and managers are present and looking to hire. The Formula SAE club is an indispensable resource for all students to not only gain those aforementioned connections, but to learn about cars, engineering, business, and teamwork.
