Geography: a Chico State passport to world knowledge

Our planet, peoples and technologies are churning through transformative changes that make the tools of geography critical to resilient societies. The world needs professionals who have expertise in GIS, remote sensing, urban planning, climatology, and environmental studies -- citizens who are geographically and environmentally literate. We can partner in the challenge of educating students and training future leaders. Professional conference support boosts students' academic confidence, introduces them to industry leaders and grad school advisors who share their passions, and prepares them to be the problem-solvers that society needs.

How will your donation be used? Your support will....

Send students to the 2025 CALIFORNIA GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY conference in late April (held at CSU, Stanislaus), including:

  • conference registration
  • transportation support
  • lodging/meals, and
  • research poster competition participation

Support students in geography, planning, and environmental studies!

The Department of Geography & Environmental Studies has two purposes: 1) we educate students and 2) we train future professionals. Our students develop expertise in cartography, geographical information systems (GIS), remote sensing, pyrogeography, urban & regional planning, re-photography, climatology, and environmental studies. Students in our General Education courses become geographically and environmentally literate.

Geography invites critical and creative thinking about humanity’s impact on Earth, the distribution of resources, and sustainable living at all levels. Our programs are as diverse as our perspectives in  social, cultural, economic, and natural science analyses. In each area Chico State students learn how to use geospatial technologies to reveal significant human and physical patterns. Our alumni know that geography really is the "Science of Where."

Why are donations necessary?

While we serve students in the classroom, the computer lab and in the field, we recognize that some of our deserving students struggle to supplement their academic experiences.  Our goal is to apply your gift to support students in geography, planning, and environmental studies to conduct research, attend professional meetings to report their discoveries, and gain recognition for their academic honors. Your donation will immediately and directly support students with resources they need to be successful.

Thank you to ALL who contribute to GEOG student success! We value the difference you make in their lives!  Sincerely, your friends at the Dept. of Geography & Environmental Studies.
