Description

The Latinx Graduation Celebration is a beautiful Chico State tradition of over 45 years!  What started with a small group of Latinx graduates in 1978 is now a two-event celebration that includes hundreds of graduates who are mostly the first in their families to earn a university degree.  Each year, Chico State is graduating more and more Latinx graduates, which is a cause for celebration.  The Latinx Graduation event is an opportunity to showcase our graduates’ academic success, honor graduates’ families and loved ones with a Spanish-bilingual event, and encourage graduates’ continued engagement as Wildcat alumni.  Further, the event demonstrates the transformative experience possible at Chico State to the broader community.

How will donations be used?

The Latinx Graduation Celebration is funded largely by participant student fees. However, additional funding is needed to cover the most basic costs of the event that remain unfunded by the University, such as facility and equipment rental costs, ticketing, technical media support, certificates, light refreshments, etc.  To maintain participant student fees at an affordable, pre-pandemic level, we invite your donations to sustain this wonderful Chico State tradition of over 45 years!

  • $15 funds one graduate's honor cord, certificate and commemorative program
  • $25 funds light refreshments for one graduate and their family/guests
  • $45 funds the participation fee for one graduate with demonstrated financial need
  • $150 covers event marketing costs
  • $500 covers the facility use fee for Laxson Auditorium or a modest lunch for the 40+ event volunteers

Support Latinx Graduation Celebration!

The Latinx Graduation Celebration (LGC) honors the achievement of Chico State Latinx graduates and the contributions their families and friends have made during their educational journey. In 1978, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán (MEChA), a student organization, created this event to encourage Latinos to pursue higher education. This diverse and intimate English/Spanish bilingual ceremony has flourished and now includes hundreds of Latinx and non-Latinx graduates. Due to the growing number of Chico State Latinx graduates - now, over 1/3 of all grads - the Latinx Graduation Celebration has grown to two ceremonies to accommodate the increasing interest. This event is coordinated year-round by a team of staff and student volunteers. The Latinx Graduation Celebration aligns with the University's commitment to progress as a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

Why are donations necessary?

The number of graduates interested in participating in the annual Latinx Graduation Celebration has quickly outpaced the campus resources available to cover the basic costs of this special event (facility and equipment rental costs, ticketing, technical media support, certificates, etc.)  Your donations will benefit participating graduates by offsetting operational expenses and keeping the participation student fee affordable for a primarily low-income student population. In addition, your contributions will aid the campus community in sustaining two Latinx Graduation Celebration events to meet the growing interest.
