Description

Chico State Psi Chi is committed to helping our psychology student body find their passion, succeed in their scholarly pursuits, and strive for excellence. This year, we dreamed far beyond our typical campus activities and are venturing out to San Francisco to attend the 2024 Western Psychological Association Convention. We believe that this event will broaden members’ understanding and interest in the field of psychology, promote graduate studies and appreciation of research, connect them with other successful peers and professionals, and inspire them to realize their potential.

How will donations be used?

$5: buy a student’s coffee before they attend an 8 am talk

$15: cover a participant’s transportation fee to San Francisco

$30: reduce fees from $110 to $80 to help a student in need

$110: provide a full scholarship for one participant who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend

$300: provide participants with safe lodging near the convention

Support PSI CHI!

As a chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, our organization encourages scholarly excellence by nurturing our members’ academic, professional, and personal development. We plan biweekly events such as resume workshops, expert panels, graduate school information nights, wellness activities, and plenty of guest speakers. We are thrilled to be offering this WPA Convention trip to our members this year. By meeting our GPA requirement of 3.3 or above, Psi Chi members have demonstrated that they are serious about academics, so we want to recognize and uplift them as much as we can. Connecting these dedicated students with the broader psychology community present at the WPA Convention will enrich their college experience far beyond what we achieve on campus. Participants may meet some of the researchers that they’ve been learning about, network with Ph.D. students from programs they’re interested in, and become immersed in the psychology field like they’ve never been before.

Why are donations necessary, and how will they be used?

Our club enjoys rewarding the academic excellence and achievement of students in our program, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet while pursuing their degrees. For this reason, we maintain a low entry cost for members along with the high academic standards set by the International Honor Society. For some students, we may even waive the membership fee if they show academic merit. While this allows us to serve a wider range of students, it means that we have to rely on fundraisers and donations to provide experiences of this sort to our members.

We want to further reward students for their academic achievements, regardless of their income, by offering them this transformational experience. However, between hotel, travel, registration, and food costs, attending a research convention commonly costs each participant $600-$1000. At that price, we wouldn’t be able to see this trip through. Every donation counts to reduce the cost and increase the opportunity for our members. Please help us provide them with this incredible experience!
