More about Rebound Scholars
The planning of Rebound Scholars started in the 2020-2021 academic year by a previously incarcerated student who had started a similar club at Butte College when he was there. The club officially launched in the fall of 2021 and in the Spring 2022 semester held its first event, a talk by formerly incarcerated Microsoft professional and motivational speaker Shelley Winner.
Rebound Scholars fills an important gap in student support at Chico State. Students who have been previously incarcerated or grew up in a system-impacted environment face challenges that have a more significant impact on success than students who have never been part of this demographic. Rebound Scholars provides peer support community for previously incarcerated and system impacted Chico State students.
Why are donations necessary?
Many previously incarcerated and system-impacted students enter into higher education feeling isolated and discriminated against. So much so that many do not want to reveal that they have ever been incarcerated or are justice impacted. Creating a community where these students feel accepted and supported enhances the rates of their success, makes the college experience a more enjoyable one, and creates an environment where these students can thrive.
